Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

$85 per 1-Hour Session

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is an approach to craniosacral therapy that puts deep respect of each client’s own body wisdom as a priority. Biodynamic Craniosacral Training requires development of skilled sensitivity and respect, combined with a depth of knowledge in biology, physiology and some basic psychology.

What is a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy session like?

Your session will start with a discussion about your current condition and pain experience. Then we will set an intention for the forty-five minute to one-hour session. The very light-contact work is done while you are fully clothed and is most commonly done while the client lies on a massage table. I will frequently start at the feet or with a hand under your sacrum to support the settling of your whole system. Then I will likely move to different contact points on your torso and your head. The session frequently finishes back at the feet or sacrum.

Why choose Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy supports settling and rebalancing of an over-active nervous system and disturbed glandular systems. It helps strengthen a client’s self-repair and rejuvenation functions, such as mental calmness, deep sleep, quality digestion and deep muscle relaxation.

This opportunity for deep settling of the nervous system can in turn allow the release of the “Fight or Flight” mode we frequently and subconsciously get stuck in. All of us live with some level of traumatic impact patterns: from the stresses of birth, youthful development, aging or traumatic life events that are still affecting our body-mind systems.

This gentle non-invasive method can be effective for a wide range of illnesses in adults, children and infants for both acute and chronic conditions. In situations when strong symptoms are present after physical trauma, this technique can be one of the few that will support release of traumatic effects instead of driving patterns deeper into the nervous system. For instance, it can be extremely useful for babies who have experienced a difficult birth, by gently supporting resolution of those stresses. People of all ages who have been in a car accident or sustained other injury or lingering trauma may not be aware that their nervous system is stuck in a heightened state of alert. This type of therapy helps the system reset to a more deeply relaxed normal state.

The intention of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is to support the expression of health already present in a person’s own system and so enhance the potency of the body’s self-healing and self-regulating capacities. Practitioners use a quiet “listening” with their hands to sense natural movements and rhythms of cerebrospinal fluid as it bathes the roots of the whole nervous system.

Foundations of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

The Biodynamic approach to Craniosacral Therapy was developed by Franklin Sills. Sills has been influenced by his deep interest in Buddhist practice. He first trained in the energy medicine work of Polarity Therapy with Randolph Stone, DO (doctor of osteopathy). This training introduced Sills to the various approaches to cranial osteopathy.

Franklin Sills then spent time in osteopathic school, where he studied the work of William Garner Southerland, DO. Southerland discovered the effects and treatment of congestion in the cerebrospinal fluid system.

Sills learned that as skilled practitioners such as Southerland evolved, the osteopathic model of the work started to shift. In the beginning, the model assumed that a doctor knows what clients need and would impose some change to the client’s system. It shifted to providing support for the client’s system to adjust on its own. In essence, the work became one of more sensitive “listening” and then gently “offering” new ways for the client’s system to balance. While a person’s system may not be supporting and caring for itself in the most efficient and effective way, with a biodynamic craniosacral therapist’s help, adjustments can be made from within, creating more balance, ease, and less pain.
